Speed limit enforcement is an ITS product utilized by authorities in a variety of countries to cut down on traffic-related accidents, and to enforce local speed laws for roads and highways. Speed limit enforcement cameras are far from a new technology. In fact, many types of speed cameras were invented in the 1950’s-1960’s. However, ITS products, and related technology has evolved quite a bit since those days.

Current methods of speed limit enforcement may include the use of ITS products such as RADAR, VASCAR, or LIDAR, as well as incorporate the use of number-plate recognition systems. Mobile speed cameras, as well as fixed speed cameras measure the time taken for a vehicle to pass between two points. These, and other groups, claim that speed limit enforcement cameras are used mostly as a source of revenue by local police departments, rather than to enforce traffic rules. On the other hand, a meta-analysis showed that automated speed enforcement ticketing machines may have reduced the number of traffic-related injuries and deaths.
